Review of “Shakespeare’s evil”
The play I would like to review is “Shakespeare’s evil” written and played by Piero Morelli. He is an actor and a playwright.
“Shakespeare’s evil” was performed at “Opera Prima Teatro” in Latina, Italy, the 7th April. As you can guess from the title, the show is based on Shakespeare’s works. The actor played some evil characters from the Bard’s writings.
I could recognize some villains like Richard III, the malefic Jago from « Othello », Claudius from « Hamlet », Macbeth and his cruel wife, Aaron from « Titus Andronicus » and many others.
All the characters were characterized by the lust for power. There wasn’t a definite setting. It was stunning and amazing how the actor was able to shift unexpectedly from a character to another, and so for the spectator was really difficult to distinguish which character was speaking and the related play.
So Piero Morelli went from Jago to Richard to Macbeth’s wife in a few minutes.
Based on what I saw, I can make a supposition: the show isn’t suitable for drama amateurs. Only those who really know and enjoy Shakespeare’s works can understand the play and the actor’s purpose. In fact, it isn’t enough to appreciate Shakespeare’s work but it is necessary to love the vivid descriptions of the characters’ evil, anguish and dark side expressed by Shakespeare playing with words.
I really loved the actor and the performance, so I deeply recommend it to all people who can understand Shakespeare’s «unlovable » side, as I like to define it.
